چکیده

Abstract An updated global climatology of blanketing sporadic E (E s ) is developed from a combined data set Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (RO) and ground‐based ionosonde soundings over the period September 2006–January 2019. A total 46 sites 3.2 million Ionosphere Radio Observatory network in combination with 3.0 occultations Constellation Observing for Meteorology, Ionosphere, Climate constellation are used to calculate occurrence rates (ORs) two frequency thresholds: all sporadic‐E no limit on intensity (all‐E moderate‐E fbEs ≥ 3 MHz. Following GPS‐RO comparison by Carmona et al. (2022), https://doi.org/10.3390/rs14030581 all‐E calculated using an amplitude‐based S 4 threshold while use primarily phase‐based technique. Occurrence separated intensity, season, month, solar local time quiet geomagnetic conditions. Overall, general trends agree previous climatologies ORs peak near 50% 25% measured mid‐latitudes during summer late afternoon. Low observed South Atlantic Anomaly North America, asymmetry between hemispheres higher Northern Hemisphere. High‐latitude morning found be stronger but less frequent nearly equal mid‐latitude maximums.

Backpropagation Processing of GPS Radio Occultation Data

We provide an assessment of the backpropagation (BP) method for processing GPS radio occultations using simulations as well as recent data from CHAMP and SAC-C. It is found that BP gives improved retrievals over the standard Doppler technique, even when multipath ambiguities are not completely removed. In addition, by being an amplitude-weighted algorithm, BP is robust in the presence of receiv...

Atmosphere sounding using GPS radio occultation

Introduction On July 17, 1995 the U.S. Air Force announced “ .. that today the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite constellation has met all requirements for Full Operational Capability”. Apart from precise positioning GPS signals also can be used to derive characteristic properties of the propagation medium (neutral atmosphere and ionosphere). Onboard the Low-Earth-Orbiting MICROLAB-1 sa...

Potential Impact of COSMIC GPS Radio Occultation Data on Regional

A major challenge for operational numerical weather prediction over the Antarctic and Southern Ocean is the lack of traditional meteorological observations. This increases uncertainty in the model initial condition and results in inferior forecast skills as compared with numerical weather prediction in mid-latitudes over the Northern Hemisphere. With the lack of traditional observations over th...

Assimilation of GPS Radio Occultation Data for Numerical Weather Prediction

With the availability of approximately 4,000 radio occultation soundings per day within three hours of observation, COSMIC has the potential to contribute significantly to global and regional weather analysis and prediction. However, the basic radio occultation measurements (phase delays) are very different from traditional meteorological measurements (i.e., temperature, water vapor), and to ef...
